Best for: Individual consumers and professionals. Start with something along the lines of, "What's the largest kitchen you've worked on? I went to two different Lowe's. In both cases the "designer" struggled with what we wanted.
We were keeping our perimeter cabinets, adding a different island, and 2 pantry cabinets for each side of our fridge. The concept of the cabinetry over the stove that looks like a hearth--totally confused them. Then we went to Just Cabinets. Had a much better result. For example, since we were going to order 2 24" cabinets for the island, they explained that if the cabinets didn't face the same direction, we would have to compensate for the way they lined up.
They made sure we had all the small details we would need to make the island look finished. The staff at both Lowe's we tried never mentioned some of the necessary trim.
Also at Just Cabinets, the cabinets were cheaper, so that was a bonus. I cannot speak for any other Lowe's, but this was my experience at 2 different ones. Perhaps you should go in and give it a try, but then take your plans to someone else that sells the same cabinets, and see what they come up with.
I also will say that when the cabinets we did order arrived, and we found a couple of things wrong with them, J. I think it varies by store and by employee. You will need to oversee things a bit more than if you went with a smaller company because you don't know if you got a good one or not. Get references just like with any other kitchen shop. Seeking low budget design ideas for dated kitchen with potential Has anyone ever put kitchen worktop against a low window?
We have had a good experience with lowes for kitchen design. The first design we did was really our own but the gal there helped us with all the little details like the direction the doors open in and such. Then when I wanted to close an exterior door and change the whole thing they ended up redoing the design and using all the cabinets in my original order but one and they took that one back. We now have all our materials so I guess once they are all up I will have more to say but the people who helped us were great.
It really costs nothing to have them design it. I would go and do it and then tell them you are not ready to order just yet, have to remeasure and such. No harm done and hay it might just work out. I am a little uncomfortable with the thought of doing such an expensive project as a kitchen redo without the designer coming out to see it. No matter how accurate your measurements are, a designer will have unique ideas from standing in the space.
There is someone here who recently posted pictures of her gorgeous barrel front range hood that has busted her husband's head open several times. The lowes kitchen designer did not catch the fact that the hood would be too low and would be a hazard. The ones that work at most lowes are just employees who design kitchen, they are NOT certified kitchen designers. You would be much better off posting your floor plan here and letting some of the wonderful and helpful kitchen designers that are here help you.
Thanks for your thoughts. Our kitchen is small 9x10 and so is our budget. I can see spending money on a true design professional if we were going to move a wall or get an island. I spoke to Lowe's at lunch. For our price range, we would do Shenandoah Cabinets. I searched the archives and they are a midlevel brand made by American Woodmark. If anyone has Shenandoah Cabinets, please tell me how you like them. We used Lowe's for our remodel. Our KD was very helpful but I can't say he really suggested too many things or gave me many things to think about that I didn't already know.
That being said, I was very particular about what I wanted, knew how I wanted things and where I wanted them. I looked up the KM specs online and used that to design my kitchen.
He was excellent about faxing me redone kitchen designs and did two different designs for me to compare. If you don't really have any idea about what you want and need someone to make suggestions, Lowes would be fine if you make sure you work with a very competent designer there. Otherwise, might need to shop around. Or just post on here and let everyone make suggestions!
I didn't have the money to hire someone so it was a moot point for me! We worked with 2 different designers at 2 different Lowes but didn't end up there. We created our own design w lots of help from this forum and went with a local cabinet maker.
I wanted to let you know that our experience varied widely by store and designer. One store was much more professional than the other and one designer was much more knowledgeable than the other. Another thing to remember - Their job is to sell cabinets. They are trying to pack as many cabinets in your kitchen as possible! I worked with a great Lowe's designer, but that being said I"m sure there are some terrible ones out there.
Like most people have mentioned it really depends on who you get. We will probably not go with Lowe's bc the DH has his heart set on custom, but my experience at Lowe's was great. Try Lowe's it's free. That was about the 4th place we went. The cost was going to be more than what we wanted to spend. It was their most expensive line. I asked if we could try the same design with a less expensive line and for some reason she was not interested.
Now that I have been using the kitchen for about 6 weeks I'm very happy with the way my KD arranged everything. I was my own contractor and I did not use a true design professional.
I came in under budget too! But it did take a little longer than expected. This is the second project we've done with Lowes - and we chose a particular Lowes because the designer is outstanding. I've done two other kitchen remodels before one with Home Depot, one with a private cabinet maker and remodeled baths using private cabinet makers, and this designer we're using has stood head and shoulders over the others we've used in the past.
She did come out to the house to get a feel for the room because at one point we were toying with a major flow change to the room. At that time, for her own piece of mind, she verified the measurements.
We've talked to other designers to get a feel for their capabilities at both Home Depot and Lowes, and no one else has measured up to her capabilities. We're extremely pleased. However, that said, I would proceed with exteme caution when working with any designer. They should be able to pick up on your style and stay at least one step ahead of you during the design phase. Our Lowes designer was so very much on the same wavelength with us.
When the delivery men were delivering the cabinets last week, they asked us if we were working with a designer. They said they could tell due to all the trim and specialty pieces that were on the order. I do think it's possible to get a great kitchen even from a mediocre Lowe's "KD". Just keep tabs on everything and run everything by the people here before you commit!
I forgot to mention I had the worst experience with HD. HD was rude and would not even give me pricing without paying their design fee. Once again, I'm sure it was the specific people I dealt with at each location.
I used them for my laundry room that I just remodeled 2 months ago. While they are sturdy cabinets and look nice too there is one feature I hate. The doors are not full overlay, so you know the strip of wood that is in the middle of the cabinets? It is only on the base cabs tho, not on the wall cabs. And only on the 36" base as the 24" base just has a single door. The wall cabs have the strip on the cabinet itself, not on the door.
Now, if you want to put something very wide in the cabinet, its handy to have that wide opening without the wood strip getting in the way, but its a pain for me to have to open one door in order to open the other. They are nice cabinets tho, I ordered mine in "Tawney". We ordered the Shenanddoah cabs for the same reason as mountaineergirl.
We really did not want to spend a crazy lot on our remodel. We have not installed yet but the ones we have opened so far look great and if there is a problem I believe their return policy is excellent. Not that we want to go through that. One cabinet was smashed up in transit and the replacement was here in about 4 days.
I think they are good enough cabinets. I got the breckenridge cherry spice. I did not go for the glaze because it cost soooo much more and I swear I could hardly see the difference between the chocolate glaze and the spice cabs in cherry.
Even Christopher Peacock in an article I read recently said get the least expensive cabinets that will do what you need. So for under 15, we will have a new kitchen all DIY, huge stress and headache but still worth the savings.
If you have an idea of what you want to go where I think lowes is fine. Just do your homework here on GW. I changed my design after I posted it here. I just cant wait to have it done :. We actually had both Lowe's and Home Depot give us their interpretation of what we had in mind for our kitchen. We ended up going with HD and had an excellent experience start to finish with their designer and the Thomasville cabinets were delivered as projected and with no flaws whatsoever.
It's quite amazing when you think about it. The numbers sizes go into the computer and then several weeks later voila - there they all are in your garage - ready to install! I DO have to interject this caveat. My VERY patient KD said he had 25 versions on his computer before the final one was okayed, so although his very first design was spot on - he was patient while we tweaked it 24 more times It might all boil down to door choice, the dollar amount and your compatibility with the designer.
Our Lowes designer has been absolutely wonderful to work with. Professional, knowledgeable, with common sense suggestions for us, she has taken great pains to give us multiple layout designs and product information from several vendors that would benefit our life style and our wallet. Others who happen to learn who we are working with all have the highest praise for her expertise.
It can be a hit and miss situation finding expert advice whether paying for it or not. We happened to have lucked out again having found this forum. I have been working with a KD at Lowe's that is terrific! She even came out to my house on her own time to look at my kitchen space.
But I have really been involved in the design, even looking through her spec book for ideas. I think it all depends on the person you get and how involved you are in the design. I used Lowe's kitchen design service and thought the person we got was very good. She was patient, listened to what I wanted and made suggestions on layout and materials.
Like others said, it's all about the skills and experience of the person at your Lowe's. I would've had no problem placing an order with her but ended up ordering from a small custom shop. Custom guy was able to do a better job with the layout of the kichen so that there were no fillers.
Lowe's designer could only configure the kitchen using the standard size cabinets, which did not exactly fit our kitchen. This is a limitation of the store not the designer. We had a Lowes designer and another big box store give us bids on Kraftmaid cabinets.
The door styles go under different names at different stores. We had our kitchen floor plan printout off the blueprints new build which showed the appliance and cabinet layout. We didn't need to change too much. We knew we wanted deep drawers, pullouts, lazy susan, desk area etc.
The girl we worked with at Lowes, and had a better rapport with, gave us the lowest price. She was very helpful in suggestions of cabinet combinations, aesthetics and so on. Also continually gave us the cost of upgrades or changes we considered making. The fellow at the other store kept changing the quality of cabinets mdf, then particle board versus plywood boxes.
